Sharilit Monique Matthews, a 41-year-old black woman, was found dead Friday, Feb. 10, in the 17800 block of Sherman Way in Reseda, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. [Editor’s note: An earlier version of this post, based on information from the coroner’s office, identified the victim as Jane Doe #14. Officers responded to a call regarding a missing adult Feb. 10., according to an LAPD news release. Matthews’ friends and family had not heard from her in almost a week, officials said. When authorities arrived at her home, they found Matthews in her bed dead. It appeared she had been dead for several days, police said. According to preliminary coroner’s records, Matthews had an incised wound to the neck. A cause of death has since been deferred pending additional lab tests, the coroner’s office said. Results will not be available for at least six to eight weeks. Authorities did not release any other information about the case. Anyone with details about Matthews’ death is asked to contact West Valley homicide detectives at (818) 374-7720. Christopher Baez, a 17-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the 7600 block of Bell Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. Gunshots were reported about 3:45 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. When authorities arrived they discovered Baez and David Hernandez shot. Hernandez, an 18-year-old Latino, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. According to coroner’s records, he suffered several gunshot wounds to his body. Baez was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Coroner’s records show he died from gunshot wounds to his chest and left forearm. During the investigation, detectives learned that Hernandez and Baez were walking along Bell Avenue when a mid-sized car approached and one of the occupants began shooting. Investigators said there were three Latinos in the vehicle. No arrests have been made in connection with the case. Anyone with information about the killing or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact the sheriff’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500. James McElroy, a 21-year-old white man, was fatally shot Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the 38000 block of 20th Street East in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. Authorities received a call of shots fired about 8:50 p.m. and found McElroy in a home with a gunshot wound, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. A gun was recovered at the scene, officials said. Paramedics were called and the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Coroner’s records show he suffered a gunshot wound to the face. During the investigation officials took Nicolas Harper, who also lived at the residence, into custody. A day after the shooting Harper, a 23-year-old Latino, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and held on an outstanding warrant, said Det. Dan McElderry, who is handling the case. McElderry said Harper remained in jail while the district attorney’s office analyzed the case and waited for McElroy’s autopsy results. According to jail records, Harper was released from jail Feb. 14 and was then re-interviewed by investigators. Subsequently, he was rearrested and charged with murder, McElderry said. Harper is being held in lieu of $2-million bail at Men’s Central Jail in downtown. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 1 in Antelope Valley. Citing the ongoing investigation, McElderry declined to provide a motive for the shooting. Anyone with additional information about the death of James McElroy is asked to contact Det.
